General Motors Shares Slide Despite Earnings Beat and Buyback

A 6.9% premarket dip greeted General Motors on Tuesday, as investors shrugged off the automaker’s announcement of a fresh $20 billion share buyback program. Despite exceeding Wall Street expectations for the third quarter, the company’s stock stumbled to $77.01, signaling skepticism toward its long-term strategy.

General Motors Shares Slide Despite Earnings Beat and Buyback

The company reported adjusted earnings of $3.70 per share, edging past the $3.69 consensus projected by FactSet. Revenue climbed 2.9% to $50.02 billion, outperforming analyst estimates of $48.78 billion. While the board authorized the massive repurchase plan—adding to the nearly $30 billion in shares bought back over the last five years—the market reaction suggests a focus on the company's tightened financial outlook rather than its capital return efforts.

Chief Executive Mary Barra acknowledged the persistence of inflationary pressures weighing on the bottom line. In a letter to shareholders, she maintained that the automaker is countering these economic headwinds through strategic product investments. Barra remains confident that the upcoming launch of several new models will bolster the portfolio in the coming years, framing the current approach as a proven path toward stability.
