The current market pressure stems from a widening gap in regional reserves. As of October 25, European storage sites were filled to 74.62% capacity, significantly trailing the five-year average of 86%. These dwindling stocks are compounded by the ongoing disruption of Qatari LNG exports, which have slowed to a trickle over the last seven months due to regional conflicts. Europe and Asia now find themselves in direct competition for limited spot supplies as temperatures drop.
Ole Hansen, Head of Commodity Strategy at Saxo Bank, noted that European gas inventories are approximately 100 TWh lower than at this point last year. This deficit represents the energy equivalent of more than 80 large LNG carriers, underscoring the precarious state of the continent's energy buffer. With transit through the Strait of Hormuz remaining uncertain, the market faces sustained upside risk as the heating season intensifies.
