MDA Space Launches 49North to Secure Canadian Defense Contracts

MDA Space is pivoting into the broader national security market with the launch of 49North, a new subsidiary dedicated to multi-domain defense systems. Based in Ottawa, the unit will focus on command-and-control capabilities to support Canada’s military priorities beyond the company's traditional orbital operations.

The strategic expansion follows the Canadian government’s announcement of a C$6.6 billion ($4.82 billion) Defense Industrial Strategy. This federal initiative aims to modernize the nation’s defense-industrial base by prioritizing domestic procurement and research, creating a direct pathway for local firms like MDA Space to capture high-value contracts.

A Shift Toward Multi-Domain Sovereignty

According to CEO Mike Greenley, 49North represents an evolution of the company’s heritage in space robotics and technology. The subsidiary is designed to provide sovereign defense capabilities across land, sea, and air, rather than remaining confined to the space sector. The new entity will leverage engineering disciplines and mission assurance protocols typically reserved for complex space programs to manage large-scale defense projects.

By establishing its headquarters in Ottawa, 49North positions itself to work closely with military officials on critical infrastructure and surveillance technologies. Greenley stated that the move is intended to enhance domestic industrial capacity while supporting Canada’s security and its partnerships with trusted allies.

The focus on C4ISR technologies—encompassing communications, intelligence, and reconnaissance—aligns with the military's push for integrated, data-driven battlefield management. 49North will offer the operational reliability and program execution needed for these large-scale national security programs, according to the company's announcement.
