Prevent Blindness Designates July as Dry Eye Awareness Month

Persistent burning, light sensitivity, and fluctuating vision are more than just minor irritations; they are hallmark symptoms of dry eye, a condition that can cause permanent ocular damage if ignored. To address this, Prevent Blindness has officially declared July as Dry Eye Month to improve public understanding and access to care.

The organization is launching a comprehensive suite of free educational resources, including expert-led videos, fact sheets, and digital tools available in both English and Spanish. Supported by OCuSOFT Inc., the campaign aims to bridge the gap between initial discomfort and professional medical intervention. This year, the initiative expands to include a dedicated discussion on the 'Focus on Eye Health' podcast featuring patient advocates Aidan Moore and Pam Gaio.

According to the American Academy of Ophthalmology, dry eye is frequently linked to systemic health issues such as diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, and thyroid dysfunction. Certain medications, ranging from common antihistamines to antidepressants and diuretics, can also exacerbate the condition. Jeff Todd, president and CEO of Prevent Blindness, emphasizes that patients must disclose their full medical history and current medication list to eye care providers to prevent long-term vision loss. Those seeking guidance on treatment, including the proper application of eye drops, can access clinical materials at PreventBlindness.org/dry-eye.
