The decision follows research from the Truth Initiative revealing that nearly 90% of vaping retailers using Shopify failed to meet basic legal requirements. These violations frequently involved inadequate age verification, improper shipping methods, or a lack of mandatory adult signatures upon delivery. Such oversights have long functioned as a primary loophole for underage consumers to access high-nicotine products.
While the removal of these storefronts represents a significant shift, the Truth Initiative maintains that broader systemic changes remain necessary. The organization is now calling on payment processors, credit card companies, and shipping services to implement similar oversight. Because most e-cigarettes and nicotine pouches currently on the market lack FDA authorization, the burden of enforcement now falls on the private companies that power the digital marketplace to prevent the distribution of these illicit goods.
