Huawei Unveils LUTERRA Grid-Forming Energy Storage Platform

At the Intersolar Europe 2026 conference in Munich, Huawei introduced LUTERRA, a next-generation smart string energy storage system designed to stabilize power grids with high renewable penetration. The platform marks a strategic shift for the company, replacing its LUNA brand with a focus on grid-forming capabilities and AI-driven efficiency.

The LUTERRA platform supports 1000 V AC voltage and offers an array capacity of 12.5 MW/50 MWh. According to Steve Zheng, President of Smart ESS Business at Huawei Digital Power, the system relies on five technical breakthroughs, including a through-busbar architecture that simplifies installation and a distributed cooling system that reduces fan noise by 40%. The architecture is engineered to improve battery consistency while utilizing silicon carbide modules to boost conversion efficiency.

Beyond hardware, Huawei is integrating digital twin technology and AI to enhance state-of-energy predictions, which the company claims will improve full-lifecycle returns for operators. The system is designed to meet Zone C safety standards, aiming for a risk profile of less than one in one million. Alongside the industrial platform, Huawei also revealed the LUTERRA S2, a new residential PV and energy storage solution, and announced a revamped digital power service strategy intended to support plant operations from planning through maintenance.
