Dr. King, who serves as a practicing certified registered nurse anesthetist, earned this distinction through his research into cannabis use and its impact on clinical safety. His work identified a critical gap in patient disclosures—often driven by social stigma—which led to the creation of the Cannabis Use and Behaviors Assessment Tool. This framework now informs pre-anesthesia assessments across both national and international healthcare systems.

Beyond his research, Dr. King has shaped professional standards through his tenure with the American Association of Nurse Anesthesiology. As a former practice committee chairperson and elected director, he contributed to over 50 evidence-based resources aimed at improving patient access and care quality. Dean Lisa Hopp noted that his selection highlights the university’s commitment to evidence-driven leadership and patient-centered care. Dr. King will be officially inducted during the Academy's annual Health Policy Conference in Washington, D.C., this October, earning the prestigious FAAN credential alongside a select group of global nursing leaders.
