By building substantial capital reserves over the past two years, these institutions have insulated themselves against potential credit losses. RBC CEO Dave McKay attributed the performance to a combination of disciplined business models and favorable market conditions that sustained high client activity levels throughout the period.
While trade tensions remain a point of caution, executives are downplaying immediate risks. TD Bank’s CFO Kelvin Tran noted that the bank is monitoring the fluid tariff situation, while CIBC reported that its most vulnerable loan segments account for less than 1% of its total portfolio. Investors have rewarded this stability, pushing bank valuations to an average of 15 times forward earnings—the highest level since 2010—as the institutions continue to outperform the broader Toronto Stock Exchange.
