Oil Prices Retreat as Markets Digest Geopolitical Cooling

After a two-week climb fueled by fears of a regional conflagration, crude oil futures pulled back on Tuesday. Traders shifted focus toward potential U.S.-Iran diplomacy, prompting a round of profit-taking that shaved roughly one dollar off the per-barrel price of West Texas Intermediate by midday in New York.

Oil Prices Retreat as Markets Digest Geopolitical Cooling

The December NYMEX West Texas Intermediate contract traded at $97.55 per barrel, down $1, while the November contract sat at $102.70. International benchmarks followed suit, with December ICE Brent falling $1.15 to $108.40. This shift marks a sharp reversal from earlier in the session, when futures climbed as much as $2 amid persistent anxiety regarding tanker security in the Strait of Hormuz and drone strikes on Saudi infrastructure.

Energy investors, having driven prices up by more than $10 over the past fortnight, opted to lock in gains as the prospect of de-escalation gained traction. Refined products saw mixed results: while RBOB gasoline contracts dropped significantly, with December delivery falling to $3.0205 per gallon, November ULSD managed a slight gain to $4.946 per gallon. The market remains sensitive to headlines concerning the eight-month-old conflict, balancing immediate supply fears against the cooling influence of diplomatic overtures.
