India’s Fuel Export Earnings Surge to $27 Billion

With global markets reeling from supply disruptions in the Middle East, India has capitalized on the volatility, recording a 50% jump in fuel export value. Between April and September, the country generated 2.59 trillion rupees, or $27.2 billion, as soaring price benchmarks far outweighed a decline in total shipping volumes.

Diesel served as the primary engine for this fiscal windfall, contributing $12.6 billion to the total—a 58% increase in rupee terms. This growth persisted despite a 19% drop in volume compared to the previous year, driven by regional diesel benchmarks reaching $151 per barrel. While the weakening rupee against the U.S. dollar amplified these gains, the fundamental driver remained a global fuel crunch that pushed gasoline prices up by 54%.

Oil Minister Hardeep Puri confirmed that New Delhi intends to maintain these export levels to stabilize international supply. India currently operates a refining capacity of 5.36 million barrels per day, a figure the government expects to push toward 6.4 million barrels per day by 2032. As refining capacity stalls in other regions, India’s strategy involves aggressive investment in both new facilities and the modernization of existing infrastructure to maintain its role as a critical global supplier.
