Mistral AI Acquires Cloud Startup Koyeb to Bolster Infrastructure

Mistral AI has reached a deal to acquire the cloud-computing startup Koyeb, marking the French AI champion's first acquisition as it seeks to streamline how developers deploy and scale artificial intelligence models.

Mistral AI Acquires Cloud Startup Koyeb to Bolster Infrastructure

The acquisition brings Koyeb’s team of 16 engineers, including its three co-founders, into Mistral’s fold starting in March. While the financial details remain undisclosed and the deal awaits regulatory approval, the move signals a strategic shift for the Paris-based unicorn toward vertical integration. By absorbing Koyeb’s serverless platform, Mistral aims to remove the technical friction that often hinders developers from moving generative models from testing to production.

Integrating Cloud Capabilities

Koyeb’s existing platform will remain operational in the short term but is slated to become the backbone of Mistral’s core compute infrastructure in the coming months. According to a statement from Koyeb, the company chose to join Mistral to help build a robust, European-centric AI infrastructure. As part of the transition, Koyeb will shift its focus toward its professional and higher-tier subscription plans, citing the high operational costs of maintaining its free service tier.

This deal follows a period of rapid growth for Mistral, which has emerged as the primary European competitor to U.S. giants like OpenAI and Google. By internalizing infrastructure expertise, the company is positioning itself to offer a more seamless developer experience, allowing engineers to focus on code rather than the underlying hardware complexities.
